The Royal Legacy
The Only Thai Monarch Born in the USA

“King Bhumibol has a special place in the hearts of Americans, not only he is the only king born in the United States, but because he is the son of a man [who] was notable and good, and whose only ambition was to aid his fellow-countrymen.”
Excerpt from USIS
King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the only Thai monarch born in the United States. H.M. was born at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on December 5, 1927 to Princess Mother Sangwan Mahidol and Prince Mahidol of Songkla – “The Father of Modern Medicine, Public Health, and Higher Education of Thailand” – while they attended HMS.
Among other commemorative efforts, the KTBF installed The Birthplace Monument on November 18, 2003, at the intersection of Eliot and Bennett Street at Harvard Square. This historical landmark continues to attract visitors from Thailand and America who wish to express their respect and gratitude.

Trail of Thai Royalty
The Birthplace Monument is part of a greater Trail of Thai Royalty in Massachusetts and New Hampshire established by the KTBF to further honor the King’s family by marking over eleven historic sites where they stayed between 1916 and 1928.
Thousands of Thai people make the pilgrimage each year to visit these important places and feel a connection to this unique piece of history.
